Few things bring the warmth of holiday spirit into my life quite like sugar cookies. Warm, buttery, deliciousness, but oh-so-much sugar.. What’s a health-conscious vegan to do!? Start by whipping up a batch of these Vegan (No) Sugar Cookies.

First of all, let’s get something straight:

My family couldn’t be further from a “health-conscious” mindset.

Half of my extended family are obese Mormons. And if you know anything about the religion, it’s that they don’t mess around with food.

Family reunions… Church activities… You name it and there were “refreshments” afterwards.

We’re talkin’:

  • Kool-Aid,
  • Potato Salad,
  • Crock-Pot Stews, and
  • Enough Sugar Cookies to kill a human

Despite the fattening food, I had to ruin it all and go vegan.. Why would I ever want to improve my health!? (Heaven forbid!)

Now, I just sit in the corner staring at all the non-vegan food… I’m the gay, vegan cousin that no one wants to deal with.

Fine, I’ll just make my own damn cookies!

Vegan (No) Sugar Cookies for the Win!

Seriously, it was about damn time I veganized this recipe. I was dreaming about the holiday season and BOOM! It hit me like a ton of bricks!

I’ll just replace the refined sugar with maple syrup!

Ohmysweetjesus. I couldn’t have been happier with the results!

These cookies are:

  • Perfectly sweet, without being overwhelming,
  • Sinfully cinnamon-licious,
  • Crispy on the outside, and
  • Ooey, gooey on the inside

Seriously! Give these damn-delicious cookies a try! They won’t disappoint 😀

Serves 16-20 Small Sugar Cookies

  • 1 flax egg (1 Tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 Tablespoons water)
  • 2/3 cup vegan butter
  • 2/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon


  1. Start by mixing flax egg, place aside to set
  2. In a stand mixer, mix the butter and maple syrup until uniform
  3. Next, add the rest of the ingredients (including flax egg) to mixer
  4. Mix on medium-high until a dough forms
  5. Scoop cookies onto lined baking tray (Note: the cookies do not spread much, so flatten them slightly if desired)
  6. Chill dough in freezer for 30 minutes
  7. Preheat oven to 400°F
  8. Bake cookies for 9-12 minutes, until slightly golden on top
  9. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before removing from tray
