15 Quick and Easy Vegan Protein Recipes

15 vegan protein recipes

Summer is (unfortunately) making its imminent 115º descent upon us desert-dwellers. Right about now, gyms are packed full of people desperately trying to prepare their bodies for swimsuit season.
You mix that with the draw of air conditioning, and we get an epidemic almost worse than the new-years-revolutioners!

As I touch on in my about page, my health journey started with simple and healthy eating habit changes. These small changes eventually lead to me working in the nutrition industry. There, I learned to look at nutrition and exercise as a whole, rather than separate entities. What you feed your body will nourish it through the healing and rejuvenation process! Why not use the absolute best foods as your fuel?

I am still shocked when I hear a “fit” individual base their success on “eating whatever I want and working it off at the gym”.
If it was that simple, why has heart disease been the number one killer of Americans since 1921?
You may look decent on the outside, but what is your body trying to tell you from the inside? Hypertension, high cholesterol, lethargy, or even erectile-dysfunction could be signs your body is screaming for help! Listen for once!

The Complete Protein Myth

One reason fitness-junkies cling to animal proteins is the complete protein myth. This dates back to 1971 when a book titled Diet for a Small Planet was published. In it, Author Frances Moore Lappé claimed that plant foods lack some or all of the essential amino acids needed for a healthy body. She promoted the idea that in order to be a healthy vegetarian, one must eat an entire set of “complimentary proteins” in one sitting.

The author certainly didn’t mean to cause harm to the vegetarian movement. She wasn’t a nutritionist or doctor, merely a sociologist working to end world hunger. She was actually promoting vegetarianism!

In more recent editions she has corrected her mistake, retracting her previous claims. Granted one consumes enough calories, humans are almost guaranteed to get sufficient protein from plant sources. Your remarkable body is able to store amino acids throughout the day, assembling the complete proteins later. No need to stress about getting it all in one sitting!

Unfortunately, this myth is still perpetuated throughout society. Fitness magazines, the media, and even medical professionals still spread this misconception around. If you’re talking to a meat-head that refuses to listen; Soy, Buckwheat, Quinoa, and Hemp are all complete proteins. No arguing with that!
